Making Money from Hobby

A 49-year-old antique collector from Kesang, Muar, has turned his hobby into a money-making venture.

Abd Razak Abd Karim started collecting antiques in 1995 and has amassed more than 1,000 antiques with the help of business partners.

"I have brass items sourced from the rural areas in the state such as tepak sirih (betel leaf containers), trays, candle holders and tea sets," he said.

He also has motorcycles from the 1970s, a Jaguar bicycle, coal irons, old bottles and dinnerware.

Razak runs a shop in Jalan Lama Kesang-Muar and sells items priced between RM1 and RM3,000.

He said he started the business with his two partners five years ago.

"Most of the items, such as a watch from the 1970s, are still functional," he said, adding that brass items were the most sought-after by antique collectors," he said.

"Besides collectors from the state, there are also collectors who come from as far as Malacca, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore."

Mohd Rafi Khamis, 45, from Malacca, who frequents the shop, said he was interested in the bicycle and the kris collection.
